EMDR Therapy Wakefield

My name is Lynne Cole, a fully qualified and licensed EMDR practitioner and therapist in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

I have decades of experience using EMDR therapy to help people deal with and recover from a range of mental health problems. Here’s just a few of my qualifications that enable me to use EMDR effectively;

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy was developed in the 80s for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Unprocessed memories are thought to contain emotions and physical symptoms that were experienced at the time of a traumatic event, and triggering situations can cause these unpleasant sensations to resurface.

Talking therapies and counselling focus on changing thoughts and behaviours towards a certain instance that triggers negative emotions. EMDR therapy focuses on the specific memories and how they’re stored in the brain.

By focusing on these memories, EMDR aims to lessen the impact of the symptoms that develop. It incorporates eye movements and other rhythmic bilateral stimulations. This aims to reduce the impact these memories have on an individual. Traumatic memories can hinder someone’s ability to have a functioning work life and personal relationships. By turning to a mental health professional, you can experience EMDR therapy and all its benefits.

It’s very important that you feel comfortable and relaxed with your therapist and that is why I offer all new clients a free no-obligation telephone consultation.

I find that most of my clients are very keen to get started right away. If, however, you are not sure whether you wish to proceed at this point, then you are of course under no obligation to continue.

Who Can EMDR Therapy Benefit?

EMDR therapy has traditionally been used to help individuals suffering from PTSD, such as soldiers and victims of violent crimes and abuse. It can also benefit people suffering from panic attacks, bipolar disorder, sleep disturbances and grief. By helping individuals process and confront their memories, the unpleasant thoughts and feelings that crop up can be reduced significantly.

EMDR therapy can also be used to aid people with chronic illnesses. The debilitating aspects and pain surrounding chronic illness can lead to deteriorating mental health in sufferers, such as depression. If you’re unsure as to whether EMDR could benefit you, consider talking to a professional before persevering.

How Does EMDR Differ from Other Therapies?

When you attend talking therapy, such as CBT or counselling, the whole premise is to discuss whatever issues or mental health conditions you are experiencing. This enables your therapist to find ways to help you view negative situations as more positive ones, adapting the way you think and feel. With EMDR therapy, you don’t have to discuss the traumatic issue in detail, and you don’t have to do any tasks or ‘homework’ in your spare time. EMDR helps the brain process these experiences in order for you to move forward.
