Hypnotherapy

My name is Lynne Cole, a fully qualified and licensed hypnotherapist in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

I have decades of experience as a hypnotherapist, and I’ve used hypnotherapy to help with all kinds of disorders and issues.

Below are just some of the qualifications that enable me to safely and effectively use hypnotherapy to help with a range of mental health conditions;

  • Licensed Practitioner of NLP
  • YHT Diploma of Clinical Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy
  • Diploma in Smoking Cessation Therapy from the College of Integrated Therapies

Not only am I a trained hypnotherapist, but I also hold the General Qualification in Hypnotherapy Practice, which means I am accredited to supervise and train other hypnotherapists.

What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?

In the first session with a new hypnotherapist, they and the client will focus on discussing and defining the problems which bring the patient to therapy and their goals for the course.

The therapist will then explain a little about the process of hypnosis and its effects, while the client asks any questions they wish.

In each session, the therapist and client will check in with their goals, report progress, and make changes if necessary.

There will be no silly stage hypnosis stunts such as making the patient cluck like a chicken; the intention of the hypnotherapist is to help, not to humiliate, and hypnosis cannot force anyone to do anything they really don’t want to do.

The hypnotherapist will ask the client questions and talk them through scenarios to help them change their thought patterns to solve their problems.

No Obligation Counselling Consultation

It’s very important that you feel comfortable and relaxed with your therapist and that is why I offer all new clients a free no-obligation telephone consultation.

I find that most of my clients are very keen to get started right away. If, however, you are not sure whether you wish to proceed at this point, then you are of course under no obligation to continue.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy

The primary benefit of hypnotherapy is the state of mind it puts you in, which itself comes with a range of benefits.

The subject is not asleep, they remain fully aware of everything around them, but it becomes much easier to focus on only the dialogue with the therapist; you would still respond safely if the fire alarm went off, for example, but it may be easier to tune out the sound of traffic outside the building.

Being in this relaxed state is often described as very pleasant and can reduce anxiety in itself.

Suggestibility is also enhanced, and you will be more in touch with your subconscious mind, as you are during dreams. You can’t be forced to do anything, but the therapist will talk you through the reasons you should make the changes you already want to make, such as breaking a bad habit, and these changes will seem much easier and remain in your mind after the trance. It will also be easier to understand why you do things the way you currently do, and so easier to understand how to change them.

Hypnosis is powerful enough to be used as an anaesthetic during surgery or childbirth; the hypnotherapist can instruct the patient to tune out the pain, and they will not experience it. It also does not carry the medical side effects of chemical anaesthetics.

Hypnotherapy can also help to reduce the symptoms of physical illness. This might sound strange, but physical symptoms are often aggravated by anxiety, which hypnosis can significantly reduce. Irritable bowel syndrome, infertility, and side effects from chemotherapy can all improve, and recovery from illness, wounds, or surgery can be made to happen more quickly.

It’s possible to induce a trance in yourself once you learn how, so you can continue reaping the benefits even after your course ends. There are plenty of free YouTube videos which can talk you through trance and hypnotic visualisations.

About Lynne

In my practice I support people who feel a wide range of emotions: fear, sadness, doubt, overwhelmed, trapped by self-criticism, negative perceptions and or disruptive patterns.

I have a particular interest in helping people reduce anxiety as well as people who are navigating what it means to be themselves in several areas of their life.

Whatever you’re struggling with, I’m here to help you.

Does Hypnotherapy Work for Everyone?

Hypnotherapy is not recommended for people with certain physical or mental health conditions.

There are thousands of people for whom hypnotherapy works, and it often works very well quickly. Call a hypnotherapist to discuss options if you think it might work for you.

What Are the Side Effects of Hypnotherapy?

Negative reactions to hypnotherapy are not very common, but they can include dizziness, nausea, headaches, and sleep disruption.

Processing trauma via hypnosis may be effective, but also may re-traumatise the subject by bringing up memories of the trauma, so an experienced and preferably specialist therapist is recommended if you wish to do this.

How Do You Feel After Your First Hypnotherapy Session?

This varies a lot depending on the person and the topic of the session. However, subjects often report feeling much more relaxed and hopeful very soon after the session, sometimes immediately.

This doesn’t always happen, so if you feel no better or become disoriented or emotional right after the session, keep in mind that this is normal too. It might take several sessions to notice a difference. If anything about the session itself didn’t feel right, discuss it with your therapist, and if necessary, ask to be referred elsewhere.

Can Hypnotherapy Help Me Overcome Depression?

It is recommended that hypnotherapy is used in conjunction with medication and other talk therapies for many cases of depression rather than on its own, but it can certainly make a big difference in mood and motivation.

If your depression is caused by life circumstances, hypnotherapy can help you to look more objectively at the problems, solve those you can, and accept those you cannot.

If you suffer from chemical-based low moods, hypnotherapy can help to reduce the severity.

Can Hypnotherapy Help Me Lose Weight?

Hypnotherapy is not a physical medical process, so it can’t make the weight melt off with no effort. It can, however, get to the root of any issues you may have with disordered or unhealthy eating and increase motivation to exercise and stick to diet plans.

It can also assist with relaxation and improve mood, which can decrease your desire to overeat and may have positive effects on your digestion and metabolism. Speak to your doctor before attempting any weight loss program in case of underlying health issues.

Can Hypnotherapy Help Me Stop Smoking?

As with other conditions mentioned above, we advise speaking to your doctor about smoking or other addictions in addition to hypnotherapy.

However, hypnotherapy does often make a large difference when helping addictions; it is useful for tackling the reasons behind why the addiction is present and for breaking unwanted habits.

What Can Hypnosis Not Help With?

Hypnotherapy is not suitable for people with psychosis; hypnotherapy often involves talking the subject through visualisations, which can make hallucinations even worse. For this reason, while hypnotherapy can help with addictions to alcohol and drugs, you should not undergo hypnosis while actively under the influence.

It is not advised to help suicidal urges with hypnosis, because it takes a long time to work and not seeing immediate results might make the urge more intense. Hypnosis is also not recommended for subjects with pathological personality disorders.

Many practitioners are not qualified or willing to work with epilepsy sufferers, as it may be harder to identify a seizure in a person in trance.

Certain therapists specialise in dealing with certain conditions and may not feel prepared to deal with others. Ask around to find a therapist who is happy to work with your own issue before committing to a course of therapy with one.

Reach out to me with a brief explanation of why you are looking for therapy or counselling, and I’ll respond as soon as I can.
